About Metro Sound

For nearly 25 years, Metro Sound & Music Company has been developing relationships with musicians.  We deal with beginners to professionals and we take pride in sharing our years of knowledge and experience to help guide our customers.

Our store began as a vision owner, Mark Szafranski, had shortly after graduating Virginia Commonwealth University. What began as a vintage and used instrument repair shop, over the past 24 years plus, has grown into one of the largest independent music stores in region. Not only do we offer a huge selection of quality new and used instruments, we are a full line repair facility for stringed instruments, amplifiers and woodwinds. We also offer furnished hourly and monthly rehearsal spaces, a fully functional recording studio with one of the largest tracking rooms around and a spacious music lessons facility featuring some of the area's most talented instructors.

The Retail Staff is comprised of knowledgeable, professional musicians who have experience in all fields of music. We are not here to sell you things you don’t need, our main goal for the past two decades is selling and servicing quality products to developing and maintaining relationships with musicians both near and far.

When you talk to one of us you can be confident that the person on our end of the conversation is someone who will address your needs efficiently and courteously, and most of all, knowledgeably.

Over the past two decades we have become an authority on vintage, new and used music equipment. We specialize in American-made guitars and amplifiers and other quality instruments. We have also earned regional awards as “Best Music Store” from Richmond Magazine and several national awards for sales and growth from manufactures such as Mesa Boogie (our first amplifier line in 1992 followed in 1993 by Matchlessl). Our goal at Metro Sound & Music is to provide you with guidance in making quality purchases and decisions about musical instrument acquisition or repair.

We also offer visitors to our historic downtown showroom, one of the most unique selections of new and used guitars, keyboards, amps, bass, effects and drums around. Our goal is not to be the biggest music store in the world, but to be the best and to simply offer a premier selection of unique, quality instruments that you have ever seen in one place. And while you are here, be sure to check out our extensive vintage amplifiers and guitars museum towering above on our 17’ walls. Although we do not sell these particular items, we do offer them for rent for recording purposes in our studio and several selected recording studios within the region.

We are “built by our boot straps” as we say here in the heart of downtown Richmond, Virginia. Our radio and television commercials back in the early 90’s helped cast a fresh, new light on a part of town that had seen better days.  Back then, we were hopeful, and we asked our radio and a television listener to visit us in “the shiny, new downtown” long before it was either shiny or new. Today, renovation, art galleries, restaurants, shops and progress can be seen everywhere in our Historic Arts District neighborhood and we appreciate all the customer support that has contributed to this positive neighborhood transition. We are proud to have made it this far and look forward to what the future holds. Stop by our music headquarters when you are in town to meet us in person and experience our extraordinary store first-hand, we’re looking forward to seeing you.

“We’re more than a music store, we’re a music experience!”™
